Questions for the peanut gallery

If ya have any insight regarding the following, I'd love to know. Please note that this isn't one of those memes, where people pass around questions that they themselves also answer. I really do want to know what you think about the following:

What do you do with old magazines? I have six, yes six, subscriptions and those bad boys are piling up fast. I've been taking them into work to try and share the joy with my dozens of female co-workers, but is there something else I should do with them?

Do you sleep and/or shower with your jewelry on? I can't stand wearing jewelry while doing either. I took a nap with my engagement ring once and kept waking up because I was afraid I was squishing it (not that my diamond is squishy, mind you).

What was the best wedding you ever went to, and what made it so great? I ask as Brent and I are starting to delve into our planning.

Do you have a favorite healthy meal/snack? Something quick and easy? I've been eating bananas with a little chocolate sauce on them lately.

Are there any musical artists I should know about? I'm always looking for new stuff to listen to. I tend to like 2o-something-singer/songwriters a la John Mayer, Gavin DeGraw, Marc Broussard, as well as raspy, kick-ass females like Joss Stone, Rachel Yamagata, Fiona Apple.

Any cool online stores you'd like to share?

  1. Hi there, I'll try to answer what I can.

Old magazines, you might be able to take them to a recycler.

I'll sleep with my wedding ring on, but I take it off when I shower and I don't wear it when I'm on the computer. It's my only piece of jewelry that I wear.

I haven't gone to many weddings, though I really enjoyed my aunt's wedding. When my hubby and I were married, we took a hint from her wedding and held a potluck reception. 11 years later and my relatives still tell me we had the best reception ever!

Health snack - I am nuts for radishes. They are cold, crunchy, with a touch of bite.

    Music - Marianne Faithfull, Savatage

  2. If recycling is not available, some might be appropriate to take to an inpatient or extended care facility.

The most compelling moment of any wedding to me is the ceremony itself. I never remember the reception. A beautiful setting with two people is what I recall. :-)

    Raw baby carrots.

  3. For old magazines, I tend to gather them up once the pile gets really unruly and bring them to the local hospital waiting room.

Jewelry, I never take mine off. I probably should but I just never really worry about it. They do sometimes need a little extra cleaning though from shampoo residue...

Weddings, best ones I've ever been to were those that were more just a 'party' rather than a choreographed event. The more spontaneous, the better.

Music? You named most of my favourites but a couple others off the top of my head are Chantal Kreviaziuk and Dar Williams.

  4. Like your blog ... found it via blog explosion!

Regarding magazines - you can take them to the volunteer auxiliary at your local hospital. Just be sure to mark your name and address off the subscription label.

No jewelry in bed or the shower, EVER. I'm too paranoid of breakage.

The best weeding I ever went to was a backyard wedding. Very elegant, yet such a cozy feel.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here. But I LOVE steamed broccoli, celery and peanut butter, and Brussels sprouts. That's right! Brussels sprouts! You can get them in the boil in bag and they ROCK!

You may enjoy Whiskeytown's "Pneumonia." If you care to try something really old school, I've been craving Terence Trent D'Arby's "Introducing the Hardline."

    Enjoy!

  5. Mags -- Make a collage, a la your ninth grade binder.

Jewels -- I sleep and shower with the engagement ring on. I take it off only to put lotion on (no sense gooping it all up). Though sometimes it feels good to take it off to let my finger breathe. So I do that once a week when I drop it in some cleaning solution. Oh, and when I make homemade pizza dough.

Wedding -- I had the pleasure of attending at A TON of weddings when I worked at Sycamore Mineral Springs (including Scott and Laci Peterson's -- ew, creepy, I know). So I am kinda bitter about weddings. But I am super excited for my own. I want it to be really fun for the guests.

Healthy snack -- I LOVE fruit sorbet. It's cool and refreshing, usually a little tangy, too. And FAT FREE!

Music -- We tend to like/know about the same artists ... but I randomly discovered a British pop band called Snow Patrol that I'm kinda digging. Check out their single "Run" on VH-1.

Stores -- Uncommon Goods --http://www.uncommongoods.com/ -- fun, quirky gifts. Check 'em out!

BTW, I just love your blog. You always write about something fun and make me want to leave a comment! You're right -- you are creative and fun-loving!

  6. Here's my two cents:

Old magazines, I give to my dad and he puts them in the waiting room of his office. Sorry, probably won't you help you, but you did ask. :)

Wedding ring--well, if I had one I bet I wouldn't take it off. Sigh. But um, yeah, my regular jewelry, it's off the minute I get home from work. I can't sleep with jewelry on, it bugs me.

Weddings--hmm, can't think of anything terribly exciting. Most of the weddings I've been to lately have been typical Jewish weddings.

Health snack--I'm a big fan of soy chips. Trader Joe's has a good selection

Music--if you like John Mayer you should check out Guster (www.guster.com). They were co-headliners at a show a few years back. And one of them is HOT.

  7. i keep a lot of old magazines, like the new yorker, but when i dont want them anymore i either recycle them or give them to purple heart when they come to my house to collect donations.

  8. magazines - take them to a hospital inpatient ward - pref psych, because they always get forgotten about, and the days can be loooooooooong!

music - butterfly boucher is just phenomenal.

  9. Magazines? I keep my magazines only until the next issue shows up - when that happens I cut out any recipes or whatever from the old one that I want to save and toss the rest of it.

Jewelry? I sleep with my wedding rings on, well, because I feel weird without them! (You'll get over the constant fear of "hurting" your ring in a few more months - promise!) I don't shower with them on but that's not out of fear - more out of saftey for myself because my hair gets caught on the diamonds and, well, OUCH!

Best wedding? MINE! Why? Because we broke all the rules and did exactly what WE wanted! YEAH!!

Snack? If I get the munchies I just go for a bag of croutons - they're surprisingly low in fat and calories (and packed with flavor!) and if it's just a snack I can't even finish a full suggested serving size!

Artist? I haven't been into anything new lately because I think most things out there right now pretty much blow ass!

Online store? Nothing new of course, but Williams-Sonoma sure gets a lot of my money - lol!

  10. I keep a stack of old magazines in my car and distribute them as I go - Dr. offices, the gym, anyplace where people have to wait - the auto repair waiting room always needs magazines!

I sleep with my rings on- I can't take them off any longer!

Love almonds as a healthy snack

  12. ooh ooh! cool online store, www.bellaceti.com. really cute handmade jewelry at really reasonable prices.

also, the best wedding i ever went to wasn't necessarily the fanciest or most expensive. my childhood friend put a lot of personal touches (e.g. handsewn lavendar sachets for favors) into her wedding and a lot of the couple's friends were involved, which made it like one big ole party. i think the best thing is to be able to see the couple really enjoying their day and having fun, because when the couple looks too uncomfortable, it sets the tone for all the guests as well.

  13. For music - Regina Spektor album "Soviet Kitsch", she's pretty awesome.
