Wonder twin powers activate!

I have a not-so-useful "talent" of quickly determining which celebrity someone looks like. It's just a thing I do, although I doubt it'll win me any prizes or cure any diseases.

Someone at Jodi's Oscars party last weekend went on and on about how much I look like Janeane Garofalo. He told me he did a triple-take, thinking I was really her until he realized I was probably a lot younger.

Here's Janeane:

Here I am:

Brent and I

And you know what? That's not the first time I've heard it. It's been a while since anyone has told me that, but I used to get that all the time in college.

And even though I've always been a fan of her no-nonsense attitude, I used to take offense when people made that claim. After all, a big part of her career was based on self-deprecating humor, insisting that she was ugly.

My attitude changed when I met a friend of my old roommate. Both of them were visiting to perform comedy in my college town. While hanging out after the performance, the friend looked at me and said, "Do you know who you look like?" I half-laughed, half-rolled my eyes, expecting what was to follow. When I explained to him that I got that all the time but wasn't necessarily a fan of hearing it, he explained that she's actually a close friend of his and that I really should take it as a compliment because she's a beautiful person.

That shut me up. I do think she's quite cute, even if she didn't seem to think so in her stand-up routines and movies. And she is a beautiful person inside and out. Maybe I'll run into her on the streets of LA some day, and then I can tell her so in person.

So the question is, do people think that you look like anyone? If so, whom?

"I guess I just prefer to see the dark side of things. The glass is always half empty. And cracked. And I just cut my lip on it. And chipped a tooth." - Janeane Garofalo

  1. I get it sometimes. They say I resemble Richard Wilson playing Victor Meldrew on the BBC. I'm on the bottom.

  2. I don't look like anyone and no one tells me that I do but I wanted to comment on something I always observe. I often notice if people look like animals- I think a lot of big, large men with moustaches look like walruses (sp?). I also have seen people that I thought looked like a hawk, an owl and there have been a few groundhogs as well. Just my little quirk :o)

  3. I wish I had that talent! I drive myself crazy trying to figure out who people look like. I don't even notice when siblings look strikingly alike. It's like I'm completely blind to facial similarities.

  4. I think I'm sort of generic looking , so I'm frequently told that I remind people of their 1st grade teacher...or someone like that who they can't really remember that well!

  5. I think I look like Samuel L. Jackson.

  6. We do that at my job -- watch screenings of our show and try to determine who they look like ("A cross between a Steve Buscemi and that guy from the Del Taco commercials!").

For me, I get compared to anyone who shaves their head, even if everything else looks nothing like me. So I guess now I resemble both Jack Nicholson and Britney Spears.

btw, thank you very much for your compliment on my last post. That made my day!

  7. Someone once told me that I looked like Kim Basinger - which I took as a compliment - but I couldn't see it. Oh well! :) It's funny though - maybe Janeane has a familiar face - I always told my brother's girlfriend she looked like her!

  8. She is actually coming to DC on Mar 13. I was thinking about maybe getting tickets except for that it is in the middle of the week!

  9. Uh, yeah. I get told I look like Lilo from Lilo and Stitch. Also Dora the Explorer. Either way, I'm apparently cartoon-like. Don't laugh.

  10. I guess I look like my Dad, although he's not really a "celebrity" to the world. Just to me. :)

  11. I have no idea which celebrity I most resemble. I've tried those online things where you plug in a picture of yourself, but they don't seem very accurate. Maybe you should use your super power and let me know.

  12. Surfed over via Jodi.

I'm told I look like Maureen McCormick (aka Marcia Brady.) I don't think so.

  14. I always get: "You remind me of someone, you know, that actress." But no one ever says WHO.

    WHO dammit?
