This weekend I visited my mom. We shopped, ate and vegged. We also spent lots of time with my nephew, Jayden. My mom was a crack-up, as always. And my nephew was adorable, as always. I only see him every few months, so I'm always in awe of how much he's grown in between visits.
One thing I noticed is that he had a lot of scrapes. My first thought was, "Folks must not be keeping a close eye on him." Then, after spending the day with him, I learned firsthand why he's all scraped up. That boy is FEARLESS! And he's indestructable! He has no problem leaping off a toy, smack on to the ground. He would run after a bubble outside, trip, hit the concrete and then get up like nothing happened. He'd bump into a wall and not think twice about it. The only time I saw him cry from a fall was when he thought he was pushed over. Thinking back, my brother was the same way. He'd get spanked when he was little and thought it was a game. His pain threshold growing up was unbelievable.
The other thing about my nephew is that he's overcome his fear of bugs he had last time I saw him. Now he'll run to pick them up off the sidewalk or out of the dirt. It's cute when it's a rollie pollie, but scary when it's some unknown bug with yellow stripes. "That's a mystery bug! Put it down!!!"
And although he's not talking yet, he definitely understands what we're saying. He has a one-word vocabulary of "eh," which he uses in response to everything we say or when he wants something. I wish there was a Jayden-to-English dictionary because I'm soooo excited to hear his voice. It'll make being a long-distance aunt easier if I can hear his cute little voice over the phone every now and then.
