Whatever Lola wants

In Tagalog, my mother's native language from the Philippines, "Lola" means "Grandma."

Even though my mom lives relatively close at three hours away, I've still only seen her three times since I've been pregnant. We're close, as mothers and daughters go, but it's not easy to make the time to visit each other. She and her fiance took the train/bus down to LA yesterday to pick up my old car, which used to belong to her. She missed the sporty little car and was eager to take it back after my recent new car purchase.

My mom was super excited to see my expansive belly. She had fun rubbing it, asking why certain portions were harder than others. "Um, I think that might be Em Dash's butt, but I'm not certain," I told her. And she was the first person other than Brent to feel Em Dash move! My mom rubbed my belly, cooing, "Grandma is here." Em Dash kicked in response!

Also, 60% of the time when I summon Brent to watch my moving belly, Em Dash immediately stops, making me the Preggo Who Cried Wolf. "I swear, she was moving!" But when I told my mom to watch last night, Em Dash was cooperative so my mom could see my bare belly jump!

Lastly, in Stupid Baby Tricks, I pulled out our doppler so my mom could hear the rapid heartbeat. She was in definite awe.

I'm so glad Em Dash was "on" last night. I think I filled my mom with enough Grandma-to-be moments to hold her over for a while.

The grandparent relationship can be so special. I've realized a lot about it that I'd never thought of before I had Lila. It has to be truly amazing to see your baby have a baby of her own. I don't know if it's just b/c we're all girls, but the bond between Lila, my mother, and me is just crazy. It sounds like you're going to feel that too.

That is so great. I'm glad your mom was able to see that considering she is farther away and doesn't have a regular opportunity to see you. Grandmas are great.
Actually, my grandmother's name is Lolita and she's been called Lola her entire life. I guess it was fitting because she turned out to be a fantastic grandmother.
I can't wait for October to see your new arrival.

It must be so strange, yet wonderful for a mother to feel her daughter's baby moving around in her belly. How special, though.

how awesome!! i'm glad your mom's long trip down was made even more special by feeling her grandaughter's movements :) so, is em dash gonna be calling your mom "Lola"? i personally truly loved calling my grandma "Lola" - it felt so much more personal :)

Awww, em dash is going to have a great relationship with lola :)

isn't it funny, i never did call my gram "lola." she was "nanay" to everyone, including all the grandkids!

("nanay" = "mother," for the non-tagalog speakers)

aw that is so incredibly precious! :)

Aw, that's cute! Steppie has a Lola too (on her mom's side).

OMG, my little one also stops moving immediately when I tell h to check it out. I feel like the boy who cried wolf.

Glad to see I'm not alone!

She is anxious to meet your grandma!! That is so sweet!! I think I was one of the first to feel my niece moved. My BIL would get frustrated. When I had the chance I laid next to my sister with my hand on her belly for probably 45 mins before Aubrey moved..rather until I felt her. It was my only chance and I wasn't going to pass it up!!

That is so adorable!!

I had a Filipino grandmother too when I was growing up and called her lola too.

Modern pregnancy is so high-tech! You can even keep tabs on the weather inside your belly!

So awesome. I'll bet Lola was excited beyond belief.
