Moving on up

You know what's fun?

Sharing big news with folks, who automatically assume that any "big news" from a woman of childbearing ages means a B-A-B-Y when, in fact, it's not.

We have big news to share.

And no, it's not a baby.

And no, it's not two babies.

(Also, not three or any multiples of babies, just to be clear.)

We're moving.

Sometime next month.

Crazy, huh?

Brent was recruited for and offered a job that's just too good to pass up.

They flew us up recently to meet his potential team and to allow us to check out the city. He loved the company, the office and his future co-workers. But as for the city? It wasn't love-at-first-sight, but more like a slow burn that eventually ignited. The more we researched, the more we thought about it, the more we weighed the pros and cons, the more we warmed up to the idea.

Yes, we KNOW about the weather.

We've HEARD.

No need to burst our bubble of excitement with talk of that or other Portland pitfalls you may assume, m'kay?

We also know that the cost of living is 59% more here in Santa Monica compared to Portland. Also? No sales tax in the state of Oregon!

:::happy dance:::

The first question our friends have asked is how our parents are taking it. Brent's parents are here in Los Angeles, and my mom's is a three-hour drive.

My in-laws, who see Em at least once a week, were understandably sad at first, but they became quite supportive once they realized what all this move means for us and our family. My mom, who is normally laid back about everything, was more upset than expected, but she came around quickly after she understood the impact on Brent's career and our quality of life.

They're enamored with Em, of course, and will miss the easy access to all of us, but thankfully it's a quick 2-hour flight up north. And we'll find ourselves a nice, big house with plenty of room for guests. PLENTY!

This is good, peeps.

So, wish us luck!

P.S. If you know of any Portland bloggers I'd love, feel free to share links! I'm excited to meet Kerri, FINALLY! And hopefully this means I'll get up to Seattle every now and then to hang with Jen, Sizzle and Mandy.

  6. Wow! How exciting - I have to admit, the baby thing was my first thought.

BUT CONGRATS!! sS a life long Oregonian myself - and longtime reader/lurker of your blog and twitter follower (@hidees13) I say WELCOME to our fine city! Yes, you will miss the amazing california weather but Portland has a lot to offer!! If you need any advice about the city, suburbs etc, feel free to hit me up! PS. get up here fast we're having awesome weather right now (Finally!)

Tomorrow is the annual "Bridge Pedal" http://blog.bridgepedal.com/- the city shuts down all of it's 10 bridges for the morning and over 20,000 bicyclists and families tour the city. It's pretty awesome and one of my favorite events of the year (and about the only time i really consider myself a cyclist) Next year get that little girl of yours on a bike and do the family ride. It's awesome!

The foodie scene (food carts!), crafty wonderland events, outdoor activities and the famously friendly people welcome you!!

  20. Congrats! I have never commented before (bad reader!) but since you are talking about my beautiful state I had to! Portland is lovely as is most of the state. The Oregon coast is completely different than the Southern California coast but it is just as beautiful. The lower cost of living and no sales tax is pretty awesome too! PLUS, while the weather can be pretty nasty some of the time you will never have to get out of the car to pump your own gas! Basically what I am saying is that Oregon rocks and I hope your little family loves it as much as I do! Good luck with the move!

  22. CONGRATULATIONS, NANETTE!

What a great opportunity for your husband and your family to start a new stage in your life. I love Portland: the food carts, the seasons, the coffee and Powell's Books! I am sure you will love it despite being away from familiar L.A. and away from driving distance but a new exciting adventure awaits you. And I can't wait to read about it!!

Congrats. Moving is fun and stressful. I just did it earlier this year from DC to Florida. I gave notice and moved in 3 weeks while my husband sold the house. I never really got to say good-bye to my friends since I had to clean up the house and pack stuff all the time until I got on a plane. Good luck and enjoy.

  38. I'm super happy and excited for you guys. I have a few friends that live and have lived in Portland and they all love it.

We just moved away from my family and it's hard to not see them, but the adventure and the better situation for life is totally worth it.
