Catch ya on the flip side

I picked up Em from preschool yesterday, and we did her usual gathering-of-all-the-things. When it came time to put on her jacket, she threw it on the ground excitedly and proclaimed, "Let's flip it, Mommy!"

Then she blew my mind and did this:

This is particularly exciting because 1) she hates wearing a jacket and 2) I always have to help her get them on. Now she's excited to put on her jacket AND she can do it herself!

Boom!
Jacket

Em's preschool teacher is a smart woman. I've had a hard enough time getting one toddler suited up. I can't imagine how long it takes to get 10 of them bundled up for their neighborhood walks.

For the uninitiated, this is the kind of stuff parents get excited about. Or maybe just the kind of stuff I get excited about.

  1. Ummm, HER LITTLE VOICE IS SO ADORABLE! That's really what I took away from this (aside from dying a little bit as usual because she's so beautiful and so adorable).

  2. Too funny watching her. I distinctly remember doing my jackets that way as a preschooler. B's school taught him to put the hood on his head to hold the jacket in place, then put his arms in. That seems to work, too (as long as the arms aren't "insided out").

  5. That's so awesome that I'M going to start doing that when I put my jacket on. I won't look as cute as Em doing it, but still. :)

  6. This is awesome. I need to teach this to Lei since it's always a struggle putting on her jacket. GENIUS!

  13. I learned this 25 years ago when I was in pre-school. Must have stuck because I've used it with my students!

  14. I sent a link to this to my little sister who is a pre-school teacher... She wrote me back and said

Mallory: oh that's so funny how excited she is... I guarantee anyone who works in child care knows about that., and it's not so much of a trick as it is a way of life.

Haha, I had to laugh. I thought it was crazy clever!

  16. Yep. Claire's daycare taught her the same thing when she was 2. Loved it. :)

  17. Steve read about that trick in one of his Dad books but we haven't tried it on the floor yet. We've just held it upside down for his to put his arms in. I'll have to try that on the floor next.

  18. I think I will say "ta-da!" every time after I put my jacket on because it makes putting one's jacket on look so much cooler. Or maybe it was just Em doing it that looked so cute :) Rex gets his coats on no problem (must be all the practice he gets living in Iowa) but that is a really cool way to do it for little kids- maybe I'll teach it to Wyatt that way.

  19. I'd never seen this before, that is until I was visiting CIndy in NC. Her Catie does the same thing. So clever.
