Team Blue or Team Pink?

TOMORROW is our elective ultrasound to find out if we're continued members of Team Pink or if we'll be joining the ranks of Team Blue. I love hearing others' guesses, so I'd love to hear what YOU think we're having.

I don't put a lot of faith in the old wives' tales since there's a 50/50 chance each one is right, but they're still fun to think about. I found this wonderful compilation of pregnancy old wives' tales in a piece by a doula and am sharing them below, along with my own comments in italics.

Feel free to leave your guess in the comments!

Linea Nigra
Latin for ‘black line’, a linea nigra may appear on your belly during pregnancy (some women wont get it – doesn’t mean anything!). This is a purple/brownish line which extends down the middle of your belly to your pubic area, about 1cm in width. It’s known that hormones cause the linea nigra pigmentation, but it’s not known why it forms in the vertical line that it does.

The old wives tale is this – if you get a línea nigra and it runs from your pubic area to your belly button only, it’s a girl, and if it goes all the way up from your pubic area to the bottom-most part of you rib cage, then it’s a boy.

Mine is from the belly button down, so GIRL.

Carrying High or Low?
This is a well known old wives tale – so many people will want to look at your belly and think they can guess just from looking! So as the tale goes, if you are carrying low, it’s a boy, or if you’re carrying high it’s a girl. We won't tell them that the way the baby is carried is actually a reflection of your own body shape, muscle, baby’s position and other physical factors!

I'm not a great judge of this, but looking at my bump pics I'll say I'm carrying low-ish. BOY.

The Draino Thingo
There is an old wives tale that involves mixing your urine with Draino but not only is Draino dangerous and bad for you, it’s bad for the environment too. So we don’t recommend this one.

Non-applicable because yeah, that's too strange.

Dry or Soft?
If your skin is dry, you’re said to be having a boy – and if it’s soft, then a girl is on the way. skin is dry in places, but I still think it's soft overall. GIRL.

What’s Baby’s Heartrate?
First, to set the record straight, until it’s born, your baby’s heartrate will not be affected by it’s gender. But so they say, if you’re carrying a girl, then baby’s heartrate will be above 140bpm (beats per minute). A boy is said to have a heart rate under 140bpm. A study published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine (1996) has dismissed this theory, as has other research. Your baby’s heart rate will change often during a pregnancy, depending on the baby’s age and it’s movement. Anything from 120-160bpm is normal for an unborn baby.

I put absolutely no faith in this one for the same reasons as the author, but if I'm playing along, our first two recorded heartrates were 155, and the latest was 140. GIRL.

Your Flowing Locks
Has your hair become thinner and dull? Or full-bodied and glossy? Thin and dull says girl, gorgeous and glossy says a boy.

My hair isn't thinner, but it's definitely more dull than it usually is. The same thing happened with Em's pregnancy. GIRL.

Where Are You Carrying Extra Weight?
Even those extra pregnancy kilos is said to give us an insight into your baby’s gender! If you are carrying extra weight at the front, then you’re having a boy… but if you are carrying extra weight on your bum and hips, then you have been carrying a girl.

I feel like my butt is bigger this time around. GIRL.

Ahhh, Now I Know Why We Learn Maths At School!
Because if you combine your age at the time of conception with the number of the month you conceived and the resulting number is odd – then it’s a girl on the way. If the resulting number is even, then it’s a boy for you.

I was 34. We conceived in May (the fifth month of the year). 34+5 = 39. GIRL.

Sweet, Salty or Sour?
Another well known old wives tale!!! Are you craving sweet foods like juice, fruits and chocolate? if so, old wives say that you could be having a girl. But if you’re craving sour or salty foods, then you could be having a boy. It’s also said that if you are having a boy, you will crave protein like meat and dairy. I have trouble believing this one because I think we’d be overrun by a population of females – we all love chocolate pregnant or not!

I'm all about juice and fruits, like I was with Em. I have had some recent cravings for steak, though. Sweet outweighs the protein in this case, though. GIRL.

The Wedding Ring Over The Belly Trick!
Get your wedding ring (or other ring/needle/pin) and attach it with a strand of your hair or some string. Lie down and dangle the ring over your belly. If it starts moving in circles, you are having a boy, or if it moves like a pendulum from side to side, then you are having a girl.

I haven't tried this, so I can't weigh in here.

Morning Sickness?
Did you experience morning sickness in early pregnancy? If you did, then you’re said to be carrying a girl, but if you didn’t have morning sickness, then it’s a boy. Oh! That one was actually true for me!

I didn't actually gag, but I was really nauseous in this early pregnancy. Having said that, I had absolutely NO morning sickness/nausea with Em's pregnancy, and she's obviously a girl. According to the old wives' tale, GIRL.

Cold Feet?
If your feet get colder than they used to pre-pregnancy, it’s a sign you have a boy on the way. If your feet are the same, then it’s a girl!

Not any colder. GIRL.

How Do You Look?
Do you look better than ever while pregnant? Or has the pregnancy done your looks no favours? As it goes, if you look great during pregnancy, then you are carrying a boy. If you don’t look too flash, you’re having a girl, because she’s stolen all your good looks!

Hmm. Based on increased acne and the dull hair, I'll say GIRL.

How’s Your Partner’s Belly?
Apparently, if your husband puts on ‘sympathy’ weight with you during your pregnancy, then you’re supposed to be carrying a girl. If he doesn’t put on any weight, then it’s a boy.

Brent, the bastard, has LOST weight and almost got smacked when he said, "I've lost whatever weight you've gained!" I'll take What Not To Say To A Pregnant Woman for $600, Alex. BOY.

The Breast Test!
If you look in the mirror at your breasts, which one is larger? If it’s the right one, you’re carrying a boy and for a larger left breast, then it’s a girl. Which only leaves one question… if your breasts are both the same size, does that mean one of each? I’ll leave you with that to ponder!

Right. BOY.

North or South?
No I don’t mean your boobs! When you sleep, is your pillow north or south? If it’s north, then expect a boy, or south means a girl is on the way.

Not sure how to answer this -- my pillow is technically east, as far as the compass goes. If we can to get technical, it might be southeast so GIRL.

Pimples, Schmiples…
If you get acne during pregnancy, apparently you’re having a girl, and if you don’t, then you’re carrying a boy.

Ugh. GIRL.

Are You A Lefty or a Righty?
So when you sleep, do you sleep on your left? Because if you do, then it’s a boy for you! On your right, a girl is in sight.

Left. BOY.

Checking Out Your Wee!
Ooooookay…. now apparently if you have bright yellow urine, then you’re carrying a boy, but if it’s dull / clear, then you’re carrying a girl. On a serious note though, if you have dark urine, up your fluids intake as you may be dehydrated.

I keep hydrated enough to safely say GIRL.

What Does Your Belly Look Like?
A basketball or a watermelon? Because if it looks more like a basketball, then old wives say boy, but if it more resembles a watermelon then it’s a girl.

Watermelon. GIRL.

Hairy Legs?
Has the hair on your legs grown faster than normal? Or has it grown just like normal? Because if it’s growing faster than it did pre-pregnancy, then you’re said to be having a boy.

Faster. BOY.

  1. I'mma vote BOY just 'cuz I might be a tad bit partial. :)

  2. My guess is girl.

  3. I'm going with girl!

Also, I hate OWTs because they are such lying liars that lie. Almost every single one except fetal HR for me suggested boy...and we are Team Pink, as you know. Not sad to have a beautiful baby girl, but totally thought I was having a boy.

  4. I'm guessing boy, mostly because I want to see how gorgeous one will be who looks like Em. 8-)

  5. I vote girl simply because I'm having another girl! :-)

  6. I'm guessing girl!

  7. Man I have no idea. My biggest "clue" that I was carrying a boy as opposed to a girl was how I felt, but I have other friends who said they felt no difference. So who knows?

I will say BOY b/c that's what happened with me when I totally expected another girl. Cheers to either. They're both wonderful!

  8. One of the first signs that I was Pregnant was that the hair on my legs stopped growing. It was weird. I knew something must be up. Apparently, it happens to some people! Saved me lots of time in the shower.

    I vote Boy. Just because.

  9. those are so fun/funny, i hadn't heard of most of them. but eeee so exciting! i'm going to put my vote in for another girl.

can't wait to find out :)

  10. INTERESTING. The age + month thing was true for me. But, I carried him SO HIGH I could barely breathe, so that was false.

And, you know this, but I am guessing BOY.

  11. Jaime4:41 PM

My guess is a boy! Boy or girl, your kid is gonna be adorable. His or her big sister is a beauty.

  12. Anonymous5:40 PM

Thanks for all those great wives tales. According to the age and month of conception I am girl, everything else is close to boy and some are neither. I have been reading your blog since before your wedding and I, too, am expecting my first child January 31 next year. Squeezed it in before that horrid 'advanced maternal age' :) Best of luck at your ultrasound.

  13. Interesting! I'll have to do a similar post and have people guess what I'm having at some point. I've considered several of these, but not all of them.

For you...I was tempted to say girl because that seems to be what the old wives' tales are leaning toward. But I'm going to say boy. Can't wait to find out!

  14. My first guess was a boy but I could totally see you with two girls too. I can't wait to hear how it goes!!

  15. My guess: boy!

For posting this, while we are still early in our pregnancy, the hubster and I really enjoyed reading these and applying them to us!!

    G/L Nanners!!!

  16. What a funny post. I wish I would have tried all these things when I was pregnant. I knew with both that they were boys. And I was right.
