Bump Watch 2013: 37 Weeks
Other than the photo of me in labor with Em, this pic above at 37 weeks today may be the most pregnant photo of me in existence. The last belly pic I took with Em was 36 weeks, 6 days. She arrived promptly at 38 weeks, before we had a chance to take the next weekly pic.
My new doctor doesn't subscribe to the same theory that my Portland midwife and other LA doctor did about Mimi's potential early arrival just because Em was a little early. So while I'm still nesting away and prepping for the baby, I'm trying not to be of the mindset that she will likely be here by next week.
Having said that, my doc did see at my appointment yesterday that I'm already 1 1/2 cm dilated (10 cm is the magic number before the baby is delivered). That is no indication of impending delivery, but seeing as how I went from 3 to 9 cm in about an hour with Em, I had Brent cancel a one-day trip up to San Francisco this week. And no more traveling for him until after Mimi's arrival. Women can walk around 4+ cm dilated for WEEKS before having their baby, but my body's track record isn't necessarily in that camp.
My doctor was a little confused when I asked about the difference between Braxton Hicks (your body's "practice" contractions, which don't typically hurt) and real contractions, but then he remembered that I didn't have to pay attention to contractions with my first pregnancy because my water breaking was what sent me to the hospital. If this one starts off with contractions, we're to head to the hospital when they're 10-15 minutes apart, unlike the standard 5 minutes apart with first pregnancies. Second deliveries can move much faster than first, and I'd rather not have Mimi en route to the hospital.
In addition to prepping the house for a new baby, I've been prepping my car and myself. I took my car in for a thorough wash, which was much needed after our Portland-to-Los-Angeles roadtrip. Side note: Rainy Portland understandably has much fewer car washes than Los Angeles. I missed that about LA.
I'm going to try to get myself an appointment for a haircut this week, and now that Em is in preschool full-time again, I was able to get away for a pedicure this afternoon.
As I've been running around town, picking up last-minute baby essentials and doing other errands, I've had this increasing fear of my water breaking in public places. I know it wouldn't be the end of the world, and it's all a part of Mother Nature, yada, yada, but I still cringe at the thought of having to inform some poor Target employee that there's a clean up required in aisle 7, and um, pay no mind to my dripping pants. Gah.
When I left my appointment yesterday, the doctor said, "See ya at your appointment next week. Or at the hospital!" Wild, folks. It's just so strange to be counting down the days at this point. We'll see if you get another weekly update from me or if it'll end up being THE update of all updates.
